FEATURED ARTISTS:
Reynier Ferrer Pérez (Havana 1979) Lives and works in La Havana, Cuba. He pursued his early studies at the School of Fine Arts at San Alejandro in his native city and, after four years of training, graduated from this institution in 2004. In that same year, he initiated and finalized complementary studies in the fine arts imparted by Spanish painter José Luis Fajardo at the Man and His Purlieus Studio. At present, he is a professional artist in the Cuban capital. The artist is also a member of the Brothers Saíz Association, a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting the work of young artists and scholars. Argel Calcines, Editor-In-Chief of Opus Havana, offers these observations: “Recalcitrant toward ‘naïve abstractionism’, Reynier knows how to combine textures, slashes, and even smudges in the search for the internal dynamic within each piece. Because each painting is a battlefield, to conquer one must defer to the wisdom of Odysseus: to penetrate, by means of a horse left as an offering, and then to surprise the viewer from within his own self.”
Javier Guerra (Havana, 1969) Lives and works in La Havana, Cuba. A leading exponent of Cuba’s “New Realism” movement, in which reality is depicted with an ironic skew. Studied art at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas in Havana and the Escuela Elemental de Arte at Isla de la Juventud. Among his most resonant works are a series of fictional magazine covers on which he presents incongruous combinations of figures and settings to comment on Cuban society, its history, and politics. He has exhibited his work extensively in Cuba and it can be found in many private and public collections internationally. Gallery 106 presented Guerra’s first one-person show in the United States.
Alejandro Leyva (Havana, 1968) Lives and works in Miami, Florida. Graduate of Vocational School Luis Casas Romero Arts in Camaguey, Cuba. Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts San Alejandro, graduating from the School National Visual Arts (ENAP), City of Havana, specializing in Painting. Also works with ceramics, design, and photography.
