Going Down with The Buiding
Goodbye to Michael Alan’s Living Installation as ABC No Rio gets ready for its demolition
“Going down with the building”…..Friday Jan 20th
Michael Alan’s Living Installation will give its final show at ABC No Rio, at 156 Rivington St., New York, NY on Friday, January 20, 2012.
ABC No Rio, a collectively-run center for art and activism in New York’s Lower East Side, announced that their current building will be demolished in late March. Now in its 32nd year of operation, the arts organization plans to construct a new $3.4 million center on the site with an emphasis sustainability.
ABC No Rio’s building serves as the home for artist Michael Alan’s Living Installation. ”ABC to me is the most historic punk art space left in my fine city. This is like when Patti Smith played CBGB before it closed”, says artist Michael Alan. Simultaneous to the demolition, the Living Installation will remain on hiatus while Michael Alan fills his other artistic commitments.
Join Michael for a double show: Going Down with The Building, from the bottom to the top! This is an interactive event where performance art models will be painted by Michael Alan and participants will be invited to join and become part of the live installation. The event will be accompanied by a soundtrack scored by Japanther, The Krays, Geneva Jacuzzi, Jesse Jones of Yuppicide, Renaldo of Renaldo and The Loaf and others with whom Michael Alan collaborated musically to create songs specific to this event. There will also be performances by Dave Modello, Steev Perez, Kim De’ville, Michael Alien, and Laura Bartczak.
The event entails: 4 performers in the main space, at all 4 points of the gallery, over 90 printed oversize line drawings placed on every part of the wall. Each performer will be challenged and turned into an acting revelation of change and movement. Working with the body, Alan and his team will go to all 4 corners to channel the energy of the 32 years that ABC No Rio has been operating. The Living Installation is life slowed down. Every movement, every material and texture is placed on the body, turning the performers and the space around them into a Living Installation.
